Giele Cave

I met Jeff Layton and Mike Coffey and drove out to the area the cave was supposed to be in. We had a nice hike on this beautiful day. A welcome change from the weather we have had the past few months. I plugged the location into my GPS unit and we walked ¼ mile to the entrance. On the way we checked the sinks and snapped a picture of a cool frozen waterfall. Once there we discovered that the entrance was vertical, so we went back to the JEEP to get the gear. At this time I was supposed to meet up with the rest of the group to go open a pit in St Gen. I checked my voice mail and Edmund left a message saying they would not be able to make it. I decided this would be a good day for Jeff and Mike’s vertical training.
We lugged the vertical gear back to the entrance where I did a disto shot of 26.6 feet. This was perfect for training! We all got harnesses on and I demonstrated dropping and coming back out, soon after Jeff and Mike were down and I followed. We explored the cave, which was a snaking tight canyon with crawling mostly at the top of a much tighter 15-foot exposure. We snapped a few pics and exited the cave. Jeff and Mike did well for their first time vertical!
